Distribution Channels - Supply chain problem - Let's flatten the pipeline #WheresThePPE
Many nurses among the 2K+ members of my small charitable project in NYC are being threatened with dismissal for saying PPE is insufficient. This includes frontline people at VA and private hospitals across the city. Yet see the below clips:
#WheresThePPE Gov Cuomo 4/11/20 Briefing - see minute 42:17 et seq https://www.c-span.org/video/?471151-1/governor-cuomo-no-decision-closing-schools-york-state
#WheresThePPE Pres Trump 4/10/20 see minute 2:03:23 https://www.c-span.org/video/?471115-1/white-house-coronavirus-curve-starting-level
This looks like a supply chain problem as much as a production problem. Are we are in a "beer game," possibly with hoarding at the middle levels?
Have been watching the weekly meetings and issue tracking on both fabcloud and CBA coronavirus gitlab projects. I'd like to work with Sherry & Megan or anyone else on flattening the pipeline if it's not already handled. So far I see this: https://getusppe.org/makers/ possibly a good collaborator? Maybe something similar for materials that are rate-limiting?
Probably plenty of makers in my CRM who are willing. I also have a few with cars or bikes who are "essential" so legit to travel. (Beekeepers, interestingly, also count as essential.) There's at least one who is printing faceshield frames based on an approved design.
Quick bio note:
Ancient of the Visible Language Workshop pre-Media Lab, I was a student of Muriel Cooper's and Ron MacNeil's in the mid to late 1970s. Worked on the Gantry Project (prototype 20x50 foot large-scale, computer-controlled airbrush plotter). Also was quartermaster on the core team for construction of the MITOC Intervale cabin (the one that burned down- a 3-story bermed solar-heated gas-lit house with a Clivis Multrum toilet). Wellesley '78. Lawyer by training, organizer by nature. Last active around MIT in the mid-90s as a mentor on 50k Bizplan competition when engineers were still in charge, and as "house mother" at STUDS. Performed various system dynamics consulting work in various parts of the world; served on the Board of the 500-plot Fenway Victory Gardens and was a key strategist in the fight to save Fenway Park. Presently retired, minor philanthropist, caregiver to one 85yo parent, a few thousand bees, and about 2300 Beekeepers & BeeLovers.
