# Pre fab academy 2017
## Introduction to fab lab 19/11/2017
The start of the first day was very smooth, Fran has introduced us to Fab lab history.
A brief introduction about the Fab lab and the Fab lab network was clearly explained.
" A fab lab help to reduce cost of innovation and make it available for everyone which will eventually lead the to growth in the economy".
Moreover, Mr fran has showed us
The various applications people developed across the world using Fab lab.
Later that day, we were introduced to Pre Academy course and
how the Pre academy would support us to fill the gaps to undertake the Fab Academy course.
Documentation Documentation Documentation, This word Fran has frequently repeated to
address the importance of documentation for completing both the Pre Fab Academy and the Fab academy
and for running a well organized Lab with a safe environment for people to innovate and create.
Debugging table
For keeping a safe environment in our Fab lab we should stick two labels on each machine
one to identify risks and the other to direct users of the safety procedures before using the machine.
I am here to change your mentality Fran responded to his own Question why am I here

## Introduction to Linux 20/11/2017
A huge resistance vibe was introduced in the room during the second day as we read the title of second day. The class started to state
the advantages of Windows and how is it better than Linux. On the other side Fran comprehensively proved us wrong and
that everything
done in Windows could be done in Linux without having to spend a penny. Linux is an open source operating system and
its widely used for the Fab lab machines.
We started the process of transformation by researching ways for downloading Linux on Windows.
At the beginning the idea of having a virtual machine operating Linux on windows seemed suitable.
We started by downloading the virtual machine software from : and then downloaded linux Ubuntu from :
the next step was to run the virtual machine software and set part of the hard-desk for Ubuntu. Lastly we created an
account on linux and were ready to start using Ubuntu. I faced a huge lag with my ubuntu version as I had the 32 bits version
At the moment I decide to use the Live Ubuntu, it was running smooth however, the live version wont allow you to save files
so you will have to redo them whenever you close Ubuntu. I resumed the second day using the live version.
Linux:
- Command line uses Unix Philosophy
- Every function has an individual command
- Linux is case sensitive
Terminal Commands:
- [ls] For list where blue color for directory and white color for files
- [ls-l] To show the list of files
- [Clear] To clear
- [ls-a] To show hidden files
- [ls-al] To show hidden files in a list
- [ls-alh] To show the size of each file in a human readable unit as usually its in bytes
- [man ls] For command manual
- [CTRL+shift+v] To paste
- [CTRL+shift+c] To copy
- [cd] To call directory, for example cd Desktop will take yuo inside the Desktop folder
- [cd -] Take you to the last directory
- [cd ..] Would take you one line up
- [mkdir] To make a directory (folder)
- [rdmir] To remove directory
- [touch] To add a file, for example: [*touch Murad.md*] where md (mark down) is used for documentation
- [rm] To delete files
- [mv] To rename a file, for example: [*mv Murad.md principle.md*]
- [sudo su] To access the root
- [nano] Text editor in the command line
Atom: is a text editor software we are going to use for documentation. We have downloaded it using the terminal command by:
Atom command line:
- [#] is a header

1. Install Inkscape software [ sudo apt install inkscape]
2. Run inkscape
3. open an image using Inkscape
4. Choose the image and tab path then tab trace bit map
5. click on live preview then press ok (*the new image will be above the old image) Drag the old image and delete it
6. Zoom in to make sure the new image is a vector image
7. Save it
8. Reduce the image width to 15 cm, to do so press the lock at the top of the screen then change the measurement to cm and then tab 15 in width space
9. Tab file then tab export png image (** make sure the page tab is selected**)
10. Change the dpi to at least 600 dpi
11. Tab export as and select where to save your image
12. **Your image is ready to be added to the vinyl cutter software**
###### Fab model: is a software used to interface with the vinyl cutter (*Roland*)

**Note: the machine ignored the force and speed provided by the software and cut the image on its default setup**
###### Pre cutting the image
1. Manually cut your image
2. Cut the edges using a scalpel
3. Use double sided tape and tape it your vinyl
4. Slowly remove the tape in a way that only the cut edges are stuck to the tape
5. carefully place your image on the desired location
## 3D printing and scanning 22/11/2017
My task was to 3D print an Ultimaker 2 knob.
Steps:
1. I accessed [[thingiverse](http://thingiverse.com)] website and searched for the knob
2. I downloaded the knob *stl* file
3. I installed cura 3.0.1 using this link [[Cura](https://ultimaker.com/en/products/ultimaker-cura-software)]
Ultimaker 2:
- Cleaning:
Should always ensure to keep 3D printer clean. The glass bed is cleaned by opening the clips then removing the glass, the glass is then
wept with alcohol. Clean the feeder motor.
- Pre printing procedures: prior to cleaning the printer, check the printer status. This is done by making sure the
4 rods are not moving, The black belt is stable, Check the fan location. Finally, check the filament specially if
it has been used before, to do that access maintenance from the ultimaker monitor then press on move filament. ( * this step should be done every time you change the material or if you abort a job )
Cura:
1. Open the stl file
2. Choose the infill to be 20%
3. If you are printing a tall object usually tick build plate adhesion and generate support
4. Save the file to a SD card
Printing:
1. Place the SD card inside the printer
2. Access you file and print
Notes:
- Do not glue the build bed
- Filaments diameter is 2.85 mm, where the filament cover is a bit bigger however its smaller than 2.95mm
- High humidity affect the filament and could increase its diameter to more than 2.95 ( if this happens put the filament in the oven for half an hour at a temp of 40 Celsius)
- Do always break the filament, do not pull it after it comes out of the nozzle
- Sometimes the extruder spring push the filament very hard in a way the motor will start to eat the filament which will cause it to stuck.
In this case loosen up the spring by rotating the screw found above the extruder.
- Do not use carbon fiber filament unless you need a very strong object ( *It will destroy the nozzle*)
- To check whats wrong with your Ultimaker go to [[Ultimaker trouble shooting](http://support.3dverkstan.se/article/23-a-visual-ultimaker-troubleshooting-guide)]
- you can print objects with a maximuim 45 degrees without the need of support
- You can never print a pointy design using Ultimaker 2
- Always watch the first layers to ensure everything is smooth
- The building plate should be 0.1 mm away from the nozzle ( This is done by accessing going to maintenance then bed leveling and following steps)
3D Scanning:
3D scanner is used to scan and 3D draw objects. The 3D scanner we are using is the *Sense first generation*, it has one optical
camera to capture texture and one infrared camera to detect the shape.
Steps:
1. Install *sense first generation* software ( only installed on windows) and follow the steps
2. To scan an object point the camera at the object and ensure to point around each angle of the desired object
3. Once done make sure to solidify the object before printing it
4. Save the file ( file will be save with an obj extension which is readable by Cura software)
## Electronic production 23/11/2017
Roland SRM 20 (mono fab )is used to print and cut PCB.
Setting up Roland SRM 20:
- A corian material( or pad) to be placed above the machine plate, as the machine machine maximum low point is very high and wont reach the board
- Double tape the pad and stick in the printer
- machine has two types of spindles either the 3.1755 mm and 6.33 mm
- 1/46 inch milling bit is used to cut the PCB trace ( *handle with care* )
- 1/32 inch milling bit is used to cut the board and the vias
- The two milling bits we used have two flutes (sharp edges)
- The board applicable for the Rolland mono fab is the FR1 board ( made out of paper)
- ** Never use the FR4 board for this printer as those boards are made out of glass and epoxy**
- To cut a two sided board, The board should be symmetric
- Always hold the PCB board from the side ( not to rust the copper)
- Place double tape on the PCB before setting it in the printer
-
Preparing and sending the PCB to the printer:
1. upload the PCB image to the fab model website [[Fab model]( http://fabmodels.org)]
2. Choose the input to be image.png
3. Choose the output to be Roland mill (.rml)
4. Process: choose PCB traces 1/64 inch to cut traces and 1/32 inch to cut the outer board
5. set x0= 0mm, y0= omm, z0= 0mm [Setting the origin]
6. set the cut depth= 0.1mm for traces and 0.4mm for the board ( should be half the milling bit)
7. set number of ofset= 4 for traces and 0.1 for the board
8. set the input dpi= 1500
9. Save it (Do not send it)
10. Download the machine software Roland mono fab (* only for windows*)
11. Access this link [[Rolland software](http//:startup.rolanddg.com)]
12. Follow the instruction
13. Run the V pannel software for the SRM-20 printer
14. From the machine coordinates Choose the origin to x= 2mm, y= 2mm and z= -33mm ( never use continue command to reach the z level)
15. Release the milling bit to set on the board then lock it
16. Click on the user guide and Set this as the new origin
17. Press cut
18. Choose the file
19. Press output ( the machine will start printing )
